In textile conservation this week, we’re preparing a pair of hangings for storage on large, padded rolls. Storing oversize textiles this way saves them from the stress of hanging and the damaging creases of being folded. This particular roll is a bit special as it features a large, padded and embroidered coat of arms (which you can see here at the center of the roll). We’re rolling it with archival padding all around the embroidery to protect it from being crushed on the roll. The layers of the roll are interleaved with acid-free, unbuffered tissue paper, and it will be finished with a light barrier or tissue paper, a cotton cover, and a plastic outer wrap
