Verbal Description

Hello, I’m Mackenzie Strong, the museum’s curatorial assistant for Decorative Arts and Design. I will be sharing a description of Aunt Fran’s Star Basket by Dan Friday in Clearly Indigenous: Native Visions Reimagined in Glass

Dan Friday, born in 1975, is a Lummi artist. He created Aunt Fran’s Star Basket in blown glass in 2017. It is from the collection of the artist.

Aunt Fran’s Star Basket is a three-dimensional blown glass vessel. Shown in the round in a case, the work measures 14 inches tall, 16 inches wide, and 14 inches deep or 35.6 centimeters tall, 40.6 centimeters wide, and 35.6 centimeters deep. This basket, made of glass, sits on a rounded bottom. It has straight sides and a wide mouth. The piece is a rich amber-gold color and decorated in a three-by-three strand basketweave pattern. Centered from top to bottom on the vessel walls are a series of white crosses with red square centers. A thin line of turquoise defines the basket’s rim.
