Verbal Description

Hello, I’m Eric Hughett, the museum’s curatorial assistant for East Asian art. I will be sharing a description of Dream Cloud by Raya Friday in Clearly Indigenous: Native Visions Reimagined in Glass.

Raya Friday, born in 1977, is a Lummi artist. Her work, Dream Cloud from 2017, is made from cut and hand-sculpted glass, silver, and steel. It is from the collection of the artist.

Dream Cloud is a three-dimensional suspended sculpture crafted from cut and hand-sculpted glass, silver, and steel. Displayed alone in a wall case, this celestial form measures 14 inches tall, five inches wide, and 12 inches deep, or 35.6 centimeters tall, 12.7 centimeters wide, and 30.5 centimeters deep. Several components make up this hanging sculpture; a blue glass cloud is suspended out from the wall by two chains which are attached to a steel wall mount. The glass cloud is darker blue along the edges, shifting to a lighter blue and white in the center. The interior of the cloud is cut out, creating a frame-like form that follows the outline of the cloud’s form. In the center, a series of silver wires crisscross to create a web with an open circle in the middle.
