Hello, I’m Cole Rodgers, the museum’s project manager. I will be sharing a description of Out of Sight by Tammy Garcia in Clearly Indigenous: Native Visions Reimagined in Glass.
Tammy Garcia, born in 1969, is part of the Santa Clara Pueblo. She created Out of Sight in 2007 from slumped and etched glass. It is in the collection of the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and a Gift of John and Beverly Young.
Out of Sight is a slumped and etched glass sculpture. Located on the Balcony in a wall case, it faces the visitor as they exit the main gallery. This frosted and translucent object measures 86 and one-half inches tall, 36 inches wide, and 18 inches deep, or 219.7 centimeters tall, 91.4 centimeters wide, and 45.7 centimeters deep. A tall, rectangular convex glass panel is anchored to a black base by two vertical steel rods that extend from the top to the bottom sides of the panel. Etched into the panel is the figure of an Indigenous Person, they stand with their body turning away from the viewer. They hold their right hand to their forehead, shielding their eyes as they look into the distance. Strapped across their back is a decorated quiver of arrows. They hold a bow in their left hand. The figure wears decorated bands around their upper arms. This same decoration repeats down the side of their fringed breeches. They also wear a skirted apron that falls just above the knee. They stand on the ground amongst tall grasses.

This etched and incised scene acknowledges the importance of hunting in traditional Pueblo culture. This translucent sculpture is made of architectural glass that was slumped into a mold.
