Verbal Description

Hello, I am Melanie Stutenroth, the museum’s associate director of corporate engagement. I will be reading a description of the painting View of Cannes at Dusk in Picasso Landscapes: Out of Bounds.

Pablo Picasso, a Spanish artist who lived from 1881 to 1973, painted View of Cannes as Dusk in oil on canvas on March 30, 1960, in Cannes, France. It is in the collection of the National Museum of History of Art Luxembourg, where its reference number is 2002-P/Picasso.

A large horizontally oriented painting, View of Cannes at Dusk measures about 51 by 77 inches or 130 by 194.9 centimeters. In this picture, the artist has captured the city of Cannes, France, from his upper floor balcony. In the background, the sky is the dark blue of dusk. The sky meets the ocean, where two islands are evident. Along the coast is a row of older grey, multi-storied buildings with small black windows. A construction crane appears on the horizon to the right. As we move closer to the balcony in the foreground, green trees and plants, outlined in black, frame the scene. The grided balcony railing, which divides the scene, looks like metal and has decorative curved elements. In the center of the balcony, there appears to be a brown tree or houseplant with curved branches. A white form, perhaps a bird, perches on the railing.
