Shared Harmonies: Chinese Art and Music

Dr. Hou-mei Sung, CAM Curator of Asian Art, and Ming Ke, musician, will present an exciting lecture and demonstration. Chinese painting and music share common artistic ideas and aesthetic principles. Dr. Sung will give a brief overview of key concepts and Ms. Ke will demonstrate the traditional pipa music of Bawang xiejia (King Chu Doffs His Armour), which describes the tragic event when the legendary hero Xiang Yu lost the decisive battle to his rival Liu Bei, the founder of the Han dynasty (206 BC-AD 220). The piece highlights a wide range of the artist’s complex techniques and virtuosity with speed, precision, and restraint.
