Léonce Rosenberg, Paris). (Galerie Simon [Daniel Henry Kahnweiler], 1938-October 1939, Paris [3]). (Buchholz Gallery [Curt Valentin, 1902-1954], New York, October 1939-ca.1944 [4]. (Theodore Schempp, New York, 1944, sold to); Mary E. Johnston, Cincinnati, 1944-1967, by bequest to; Cincinnati Art Museum, 1967-present. Notes: [1] Kahnweiler held an exclusive contract with Gris in 1914. Provenance before 1939 comes from Douglas Cooper, Juan Gris, Paris: Berggruen Editeur, 1977, no. 81. [2] Mme. Borel loaned the work to Galerie Braun & Cie., Paris, for the exhibition Vingt-Cinq Ans de Peinture Abstraite, June 3 to 16, 1932, no. 16, Nature Morte, 1914. [3] During World War I, Kahnweiler, a German art dealer living in Paris, was forced to leave France. Upon his return in 1920 he reopened his art gallery under the name Galerie Simon. André Simon, a close friend of Kahnweiler, became the dealer's partner. Although the gallery carried Simon's name, Kahnweiler ran the gallery, and Simon remained primarily a silent partner. Simon's name and financial assistance allowed Kahnweler to make a fresh start in Paris. Kahnweiler's archives, held at the Galerie Louis Leiris, Paris, record that the painting was placed with Kahnweiler in 1938 and sold to Buchholz Gallery in October 1939. See correspondence, September 27, 2001. For a biographical account on Kahnweiler see Pierre Assouline, An Artful Life: A Biography of D. H. Kahnweiler 1884-1979, New York: Grove Weidenfeld, 1990. [4] Curt Valentin exhibited the painting in Juan Gris, Buchholz Gallery, New York, March 28 to April 22, 1944, no. 4.
