Did you know that one Sunday a month until the end of the beacon:beckon exhibition, the Rosenthal Education Center (REC) Artist in Residence Kenton Brett hosts a free art-making workshop in the REC? It’s true! In June, Kenton taught visitors how to create their own GOBO.

What is a GOBO, you ask? Not only is it a fun word to say, it is also an acronym for "Goes Before Optics" or "Go Between Optics.” In essence, a GOBO is a stencil or template that is placed inside a lighting fixture to shape, block, or pattern the beam of light. When the light shines through it, it projects an image or texture onto a surface.  GOBOs are commonly used in theatrical stage productions and in films.

Don’t get GOBO FOMO though, because Kenton created a handy dandy instruction sheet so even though you missed the workshop, you can make your own at home! Follow his instructions below to create your own GOBO. Comment and let us know what image you put in yours.

Join us on Sunday, July 5 in the REC from 1–3 p.m. for Kenton’s next free RECreate workshop!
