Audio Description

This untitled work is in ink and charcoal on paper. It was created in 1958. It is in the collection of the David C. Driskell Center at the University of Maryland in College Park.

This is a horizontal, untitled drawing in ink and charcoal on paper. There is a mixture of horizontal and vertical lines and some loosely shaded areas in charcoal. Most of the horizontal marks are stacks of swift lines spread out over the paper. Some of them resemble eyelashes. Others intersect with a vertical line, more so on the right side of the work. There are also longer, individual horizontal lines, with more straight lines on the left and curved lines on the right. There are some dense cross-hatched lines near a very thick line in the top right corner that extends to the top edge. The vertical lines are mostly curved on the left, but become straighter and closer together on the right side. Driskell used charcoal to shade in the inside areas of angles created by some lines, as well as to add texture to the background. His signature and the date of completion, “Driskell 58” is written in pencil in the bottom right corner.
