Take flight over city rooftops, travel through history, and enter the vibrant worlds of Faith Ringgold (1930–2024). In beloved books such as Tar Beach, Aunt Harriet’s Underground Railroad, Cassie’s Word Quilt, and The Invisible Princess, Ringgold combined bold art and imaginative storytelling to celebrate children’s creativity, courage, and vision.
Faith Ringgold: Seeing Children is the most comprehensive presentation of the artist’s original drawings and paintings for her children’s books, including several works never before exhibited. Organized by the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia, this landmark exhibition offers a rare look at the creative process behind Ringgold’s powerful stories.
Designed for visitors of all ages, the interactive experience unfolds across three sections—American Histories, Stories We Tell, and Seeing Children—and explores the place of young people in American society. Discover original artwork from ten of Ringgold’s best-known books: Aunt Harriet’s Underground Railroad, Bonjour Lonnie, Cassie’s Word Quilt, Dinner at Aunt Connie’s House, Harlem Renaissance Party, If A Bus Could Talk, My Dream of Martin Luther King, Tar Beach, The Invisible Princess, and We Came to America.
In Ringgold’s quilted narratives, children do more than see the world—they imagine, create, and reshape it with empathy and hope. Seeing Children invites us to look closely at how young people see themselves, understand their world, and envision possibilities beyond the limits of adult imagination.
The Cincinnati Art Museum is proud to partner with the Cincinnati and Hamilton County Public Library to bring children’s literature to life throughout the exhibition. Welcoming reading spaces and insights from librarians invite visitors to pause, explore, and experience Ringgold’s stories in new ways.
