The Hank Willis Thomas: All Things Being Equal…

Community Committee

 

The museum’s Curatorial and Learning & Interpretation staffs are less diverse than the communities we serve. For this reason, in 2019 the museum invited community members from many backgrounds to participate in shaping the exhibition Hank Willis Thomas: All Things Being Equal... Artists, educators, activists and community leaders volunteered their effort and time, joining with staff to form the Community Committee.

Following an open-call information session, the Community Committee convened in January 2020. Over the ensuing months members reflected on Hank Willis Thomas’s artworks, shared responses from their own perspectives, raised challenging questions about antiracism and diversity, equity and inclusion practices at the museum; and developed public engagement projects inspired by Thomas’s work. You will encounter Community Committee voices in public engagement projects including the Film and Discussion Series, Impact Circles, and the What Matters Now? mail art project; on artwork interpretation labels in the exhibition gallery; in the digital Workshop that provides an enlarged forum for response to exhibition artworks; and in spaces such as the rest and refection area at the midpoint of the exhibition.

The Community Committee’s public engagement projects are also featured in a section of the exhibition devoted to collaboration, social practice and impact. In the same part of the exhibition, you will find information about the Cincinnati Art Museum’s institution-wide work toward antiracism, diversity, equity and inclusion.
