Audio Description

Flowing Like a River from 1966-1967 is collage and gouache on paper. It is in the collection of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, made possible by the Caroline Thomas Fund and Harold A. and Ann R. Sorgenti Fund for African American Art.

This is a horizontal abstract artwork on paper called Flowing Like a River. Driskell used gouache paint and collage to make this. A dense collection of wavy vertical lines takes up space in this artwork. Shades of green and blue fill the background. The left corners feature a lot of dark brushstrokes that make way for transparent strokes of pink, orange, light blue, and red. There is a build-up of orange and red in the middle and more greens, blues, and pinks toward the right side. These brushstrokes do not seem to be following any particular pattern. The collage elements look like they were torn and pasted from another abstract painting. They have the thin white outlines of torn paper around them, dispersed throughout the picture. Driskell’s signature is in the bottom right corner in one of the few areas of white space.
