Notes: [1] Documents held in the archives of the Instituto Amatller de Arte Hispánico, Barcelona, indicate the painting was included in a sale at an unidentified gallery in Barcelona and that much later it entered the Merelo collection, Madrid. See correspondence March 14, 2001, and letter received April 4, 2001. [2] Previous CAM publications have listed the Merelo collection as in Barcelona; however, a reference card for the painting from the Instituto Amatller de Arte Hispánico indicates the collection was actually in Madrid. [3] Gudiol was a noted scholar on Spanish art as well as a former director of the Instituto Amatller de Arte Hispánico. The information on the painting held at the Instituto probably stems from his research.
