This Zandra Rhodes robe has undergone a journey! It was sent out into the world as a robe to accompany a matching nightgown, but it came to CAM having been converted to an evening dress. The previous owner moved the spaghetti-strap ties that once closed it invisibly from the inside to the outside to function as decorative closures. Adhesive Velcro dots were attached to the neck edge to give the robe a more modest neckline. Plus this now-gown must have partied hard, as she was dotted with brown spots (typical of liquid spills) and water marks! She came to the textile conservation lab where we returned the straps to their original configuration, removed the Velcro dots, and spot-cleaned and greatly diminished the visual evidence of her former adventures—the “gown” reversed back to the robe where she had started her life. Her next trip is to the gallery! This robe installs in Gallery 105 on February 25!
