CINCINNATI— Feel the love this Valentine’s season at the Cincinnati Art Museum’s FREE evening event Art After Dark: Love is in the Hair, Friday, February 23, 5–9 p.m.

Celebrate special feature Mementos of Affection: Ornamental Hairwork in Jewelry and Portrait Miniatures with specialty cocktails (guests 21+), live music by the Young Heirlooms, braid bar and light hairstyle stylings by AV Beauty Bar, interactive love-themed tours led by Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park Off the Grid program, food for purchase from the Terrace Café and exclusive after-hours access to the museum.

Mementos of Affection features over 100 intricate portrait miniatures and pieces of hair jewelry, including a unique collection of eighteenth-and-nineteenth-century brooches, pendants, rings and necklaces that are either made of, or incorporate, human hair. Although considered quirky or morbid today, the hairworks in this special feature used to be commonplace. The installation delves into the dual themes of why such keepsakes were created and cherished: love and mourning. Mementos of Affection is on view in Gallery 213 through November 2018.

  • Every 25 minutes from 5:40–8:15 p.m.: Interactive, love-themed tours of the permanent collection led by Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park Off the Grid program. Tours offered at 5:40, 6:05, 6:30, 7:00, 7:25, 7:50, 8:15 p.m. Meet in the front lobby.
