CINCINNATI— Celebrate the opening of special exhibition Kimono: Refashioning Contemporary Style at the Cincinnati Art Museum’s FREE evening event Art After Dark: Kimono My House, Friday, June 28, 5–10 p.m.

Enjoy J-pop (Japanese hip hop) music in the Great Hall, Taiko drum performances, a special kimono presentation from Ohio Kimono, docent-led tours, food for purchase from FUSIAN and Graeter’s Ice Cream (while supplies last), and after-hours access to the entire museum including free admission to special exhibitions Kimono: Refashioning Contemporary Style and No Spectators: The Art of Burning Man.

Visitors are encouraged to take part in the fashion fun by dressing in Harajuku (street style blending American and Japanese culture created in Harajuku district in Shibuya, Japan), kimono or other experimental couture.

Kimono: Refashioning Contemporary Style (on view June 28–September 15) celebrates the enduring influence of the kimono on fashion. Inspired by materials, forms and decorative motifs since the opening of Japan in the mid-nineteenth century, western fashion designers, alongside other artists, have produced works that acknowledge and celebrate a Japanese influence.

Featured designers include Coco Chanel, John Galliano, Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, Iris van Herpen, Issey Miyake and Rei Kawakubo—plus over a dozen examples from the Cincinnati Art Museum’s permanent collection. Organized in partnership with the Kyoto Costume Institute and Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, this exhibition displays Japanese kimono side by side with western fashionable garments from the 1870s to today.

The timeline for Art After Dark includes:

• 5–6 p.m.: Happy hour on beer, wine and cocktails. Guests 21+ only.
• 5–10 m.: DJ performances by Old School Entertainment featuring J-pop music in the Great Hall.
• 5–10 p.m.: Food available for purchase from FUSIAN and Graeter’s Ice Cream (while supplies last).
• 5–10 p.m.: Free admission to special exhibitions.
• 6:30, 7:30 and 8:30 p.m.: Docent-guided tours of Kimono: Refashioning Contemporary Style. Meet in the Front Lobby. Free admission. RSVP not required.
• 6:30–7:30 p.m.: Cincinnati Dayton Taiko performances in the Front Plaza.
• 7 and 9 p.m.: Ohio Kimono presentation and demonstration in the Fath Auditorium.
