Yaddo Circle, 1980, Egg tempera and gouache on handmade paper, Estate of the artist, courtesy of DC Moore Gallery, New York
Painted using egg tempera and gouache on handmade paper, Yaddo Circle is from 1980. It is part of the estate of the artist, courtesy of DC Moore Gallery in New York.
This is a vertical abstract painting called Yaddo Circle in egg tempera and gouache paints on heavy, rough-edged paper. In the middle, there is an outline of a circle superimposed within a loosely outlined rectangle. Another rectangle appears around the edge of the paper, as if there is a frame within a frame. At the top, there are thick white brushstrokes and drips over pastel shades of pink and blue. The rest of the painting is made up of thick, rugged brushstrokes. Inside the circle, there are squiggles and streaks of red, yellow, white, and blue on top of a background that is primarily pink. Outside of the circle, there is a denser collection of green, blue, and black with red, orange, and white accents. Toward the top, there are more horizontal marks in purple, white and blue, with pink and red showing beneath them. The texture of the brushstrokes is very rough, almost like a greasy crayon that leaves a slightly transparent streak on the paper.
