André Derain, Paris, 1939-March 1940, sold to; (Pierre Matisse Gallery, New York, March 1940-December 23, 1940, sold to [1]); John W. Warrington, Cincinnati, December 23, 1940-1941, given to; Cincinnati Art Museum, 1941-present. Notes: [1] A letter dated February 4, 1941, from Pierre Matisse to the CAM explains that the dealer visited Derain's studio in December 1939 and viewed The Three Baskets. As the artist was still working on the painting, Pierre Matisse did not have the painting shipped directly to New York. Derain completed the painting in approximately January or February 1940, and the picture left France for New York in March. It was exhibited at Pierre Matisse Gallery, New York, in April 1940, and given stock number 974.
